Jack Lynch Tunnel: Passive Fire Protection Improvement Works

The Jack Lynch Tunnel opened to traffic in June 1999. Since then the safety requirements for tunnels in the European context have been reviewed and subsequently revised.

In-line with the requirements of a European Directive 2004/54/EC, additional fire protection measures are required to enhance public safety, asset protection and route protection of the Jack Lynch tunnel.

Douglas Pool: Request for additional public hours

Cllr Laura McGonigle pictured with Christine Moloney CEO of Leisure World and Stephen Scully of Cork City Council. Copyrighted picture: Eddie O’Hare, The Evening Echo. I have submitted a motion to City Council requesting that the number of public hours at the Gus Healy pool in Douglas would be increased to match the demand for such hours.

Last October, the Government announced €340,270 grant aid under the Department of Transport, Sport and Tourism’s sport, energy upgrade and disability improvements grants scheme. City Hall also spent a further €100,000 on decoration with new tiles in the shower and changing areas, the installation of external CCTV and other items.

The Household Charge

The Household Charge is an annual charge introduced by the Local Government (Household Charge) Act 2011 which is payable by owners of residential property.

The EU/IMF Programme of Financial Support for Ireland commits the Government to the introduction of a property tax for 2012. We are one of the last countries in Europe that does not fund local services through local property-based charges.

Revenues from the household charge will support the provision of local services. These services are essential to your community. They include: fire and emergency services; maintenance and cleaning of streets; planning and development; public parks; street lighting; libraries; open spaces and leisure amenities. These are essential local services which benefit all members of the public, including business.

Following this week’s Budget announcements by both Ministers Michael Noonan and Brendan Howlin, I have put the following information together.

The decisions in this budget are difficult – but we have to make them to get Ireland working again. No government likes to make decisions like this – but we have an 18 billion euro deficit to fill.

I hope this information will be useful to you in calculating what impact the budget will have on you and your household.
