Cork Flooding

Cork City Council activated its Flood Emergency Response Plan at 3.30am this morning and its Crisis Management Team met at 7.00am in response to the flooding incidents in the City. Activation of the Flood Response Plan ensured a swift and co-ordinated response to the emerging incidents from the Councils, Fire and Emergency Services, Roads and Drainage Departments through activation of its 24 hour co-ordination system for emergency response.

The main areas affected in Cork City include:

- Blackpool Village and Watercourse Road where a significant number of properties have been affected, both business and residential

- Park Court, Ballyvolane with up to 20 residential properties affected

- Commons Road with up to 8 residential properties affected

- And the following areas with more localised flooding with some properties affected:

o Old Kinsale Road near the business park

o Sarsfield road roundabout

o Monaghan Road and Centre Park road with access to some businesses affected.

o Turner’s Cross

The Councils advance work in gully cleaning throughout the city assisted in preventing more localised incidents of flooding.

Overnight our emergency Services received a total of 128 calls, 45 of which required activation of a specific response to assist residents and businesses.

All Councils services associated with a flood response continue to be activated and will continue throughout the day to respond where required. The City Council has also activated its Housing Welfare Response Team to ensure that any tenants of the Council or residents, in distress, are supported and offered assistance.

The Councils Flood Assessment Team has also been activated to monitor weather and river levels through the day in conjunction with the County Council and the ESB.

The Council has also activated its Clean Up Response Crews to commence clean ups once water recedes in the affected areas. In the worst affected areas, such as Blackpool, the Council will provide skips for residents to assist with clean up of property.

Civil Defence have set up a temporary rest centre in Ballyvolane Sub Fire Stations, showers etc available
