Cork City Marshalled Taxi Rank
The Marshalled Taxi Rank, a Cork City Cares initiative, now operates on Friday and Saturday nights between Midnight and 3.00 a.m. on St. Patrick Street (beside Brown Thomas); this new city centre Marshalled Taxi Rank provides a monitored and serviced taxi rank for the security and comfort of Cork city centre night‐time patrons. The Cork City Cares Marshalled Taxi Rank was established in 2007 to create a city centre focal point for late night transport availability and to lend a level of reassurance to passengers and taxi drivers, with trained marshals manning the rank, CCTV coverage and Garda monitoring.
A major survey on the night time environment of Cork city centre, commissioned by Cork City Cares from McCann Erickson in 2006 highlighted public perceptions that after 11pm taxis no longer serviced the city centre as taxis preferred to pick up passengers in the inner suburbs.
The Cork City Cares Marshalled Taxi Rank quickly established a high level of support from the Cork Taxi Industry and the keen patronage of the Cork public. Now, three years down the line, the night time environment of Cork city centre has changed and the level of taxi service by the Cork Taxi Industry is much stronger.
Going forward Cork City Cares will now operate the rank over strategic and busy weekends where there is a significant increase in demand e.g. Festivals and Celebrations. This will facilitate the development of new and additional initiatives by Cork City Cares as we continue in striving to deliver a vibrant night time environment on the island of Cork city centre.
